You always need to be very careful about making any agreements and negotiating with your VARS while buying ERP. Because its not a one time buy commodity or use and throw type of system, so you have to manage your vendor very tactfully while making agreements.
Generally a new ERP costs between $5,000 and $10,000 per user. You cannot measure return on investment (or ROI), But it's very important to maintain a budget, where you can understand your cost and your revenue coming from the new system. You must identify the "best fit" product in the industry. Following are the tips of evaluation -
1. Analyze t the number of current users and forecast additional users on the new system. Try to provide the new user count to the vendor.
2. If there are products which are in excess of your budget, review once again that whether you need that genuinely or just an add on.
3. Always consider the Total Cost of Ownership. Don't agree to whatever your VAR is saying.
4. What ever ERP you are considering always ask to provide infrastructure specifications and examine the need of any third party client-server purchases or upgrades will be required.
After watching demos and all once you select your kind of ERP. You will ask your VAR to present two documents on his part. These are license agreement and the implementation services agreement.
The following are the tips for negotiating licensing -
1. VARS should give you some discounts as they have their share of profit margin from the publishers.
2. Remove those modules which are not required for your organization beforehand from the license. So that you can only pay for the modules of your choice.
3. Similarly don't buy the license of more users than you require.
4. AMC contract should be clearly clarified and well denoted. It has been seen that in AMC, there are so many hidden costs are included by the vendor. To finalize AMC contract, you must analyze all pro and cons of the AMC services offered by vendor.
Now coming to service agreement with the VAR they must specify proper rates for implementation and training of the process.
For everything, you must hire a qualified attorney to review all contracts prior to execution. He can only explain the various legalities of the agreement that will be benefited for the company.

How Can the Cloud Fit Into Your Applications Strategy?
Cloud computing has been acknowledged as the next big thing in IT industry due to its immense scalable potential, flexibility and low cost. It fits well in every organization's applications strategy though there are few considerations as well.
Cloud provides software as service by hosting commercially available applications and providing its access to its customers through internet. This makes these applications available to all with out any restrictions of geographical locations. Other very important feature of cloud applications is that these applications are hosted at a common platform by the third party with all necessary IT infrastructure available to deploy and run these applications hence, these applications are in ready to use state, which saves valuable time and effort needed for on premise installation and usage of these applications. The applications in the cloud can be logged on by the customer and used according to his business strategy.
Cloud applications fit in the dynamic environment of business very well as they are easily available and also the cost of using these applications depends upon the usage of these applications. Hence usage can be increased or decreased according to the strategy. This eliminates the extra cost that is incurred on the companies, having an on premise IT infrastructure, due to over provisioning of IT resources. Companies have to maintain IT infrastructure that is utilized completely just once or twice in a year but has to be maintained throughout the year.
Applications available in cloud environment also save huge cost that is incurred in buying and purchasing of the license to use these applications. In the natural business cycle sometimes few fundamental applications are required at many points, buying a license copy every time makes it a costly affair, companies save this expense by manipulating their strategy, cloud environment gives facility to use these applications with extra connections according to company strategy and later these connections can be turned off when need is over.
Applications like CRM, payroll, financial accounting etc which do not require customization can be accessed and used by the companies with out spending on buying them and installing hardware at their own place to run them . This saves the company management from the dilemma they are in, of using or not using these applications as the part of their strategy, due to extra burden they bring on the company's finances. The data related to these applications is also stored at the service provider's end and company need not to spend on the infrastructure for backup or storing the data. Expert support is provided for the applications running in a cloud environment and also latest technology is used for data security which is not possible for every company to avail on its own.
Cloud computing is a business model rather than a technical construct, it is a tool for strategy planning and execution but not a strategy in itself. Cloud environment can contribute in much bigger way if few considerations like security, privacy and data ownership are resolved.

What is Cloud Computing Applications?
Cloud computing applications are the applications available as SaaS over the internet which facilitates the user to run those applications without installing them on his own computer. This saves the cost of infrastructure and hardware maintenance. In general cloud computing customers do not own the infrastructure but use it from a third party provider as a service.
Cloud computing applications are loaded at the server of service provider and the service provider give access to these applications through an interface using internet. Every customer has its own unique account from which they log on to the cloud of the provider and access the application they have paid for. Service provider also provides space at his own server for the customer’s data.
Cloud computing provides access to commercially available applications without purchasing the license or infrastructure of using it. This facility allows the companies to use applications which may require some investment in hardware and purchasing of license of the software at a very low price and they need to pay only for the part of the software which they use.
Another very important aspect of cloud computing applications is the facility of backup and recovery. Since the customers use the space of the service provider for saving the data, the backup and recovery of data is the duty of the service provider, which again saves lot of money spent on infrastructure for data security.
Regular updation of features as per client demands or according to the market trends is done by the service provider which makes it available to all the users using the application. Cloud computing applications give their users the freedom of working from locations of their own choice. They need not to worry about the regular IT support they will require to keep their IT arrangement working as they need very basic IT infrastructure to run these applications.
The size and the cost of the applications are eliminated from the picture by cloud computing and it provides easy access to latest and beneficial applications. Be it CRM or payroll or any other analytic application, cloud computing makes it possible for small business owners to access these applications at a low and affordable cost.
It is not that everything is rosy with cloud computing applications. There are few serious question marks regarding the service and one of these is the right over the data. As the service provider provides the space for saving the data in case of customer calling his contract off does the closure of account gives right to the service provider to stop the customer from accessing his own data. Another important factor in using cloud computing applications is privacy. When the data is on the third party domain, encroachment is very much on cards, if this is not checked completely than companies may lose their vital information to their competitors which may prove much costlier than installing the IT infrastructure. And last but not the least it is not possible for every application to run on a public cloud. Some fundamental applications cannot be rewritten to fit in the environment of cloud computing and may not be available as cloud computing applications.
